CHARACTER
↠ Name: Oberyn Martell
↠ Canon: Game of Thrones
↠ Journal: dornishviper
↠ Canon Point: Before his battle with the Mountain (and previous game history)
↠ Age: 42

↠ Appearance:

Standing around 5'11, Oberyn is often dressed in bright colors made with the finest materials and adornments and walks with an air of confidence. He speaks in a very calm and clear voice, hinted by a Spanish-sounding accent. He has no shame in being exposed in various states of undress, being fully confident within himself and his appearance. He often seats himself with an air of indifference, but it is clear he is paying attention to all the small details. Since his last visit to the city and his last battle with a demon, he now has healed scars across his chest and right shoulder from slash marks by claws.

↠ Reference/History: History

City of Sin History: Upon his initial arrival to the city, Oberyn first had to adapt to modern technology. Running water (toilets!), a myrid of cafes, cars, and video footage was a steep learning curve coming from a man from what essentially is Medieval Times. Oberyn learns of the Coliseum where he teamed up with The Red Death and fought in battles, befriended many, and even became a bookkeeper at the Lenox House.

Making his rounds in social circles and befriending many in the city, they were all teamed together in a Hunger Games-like battle where he witnessed a few deaths of friends and even his own. Morally conflicted after finding out he could be killed and brought back to life, it made him wonder more about the City and what's going on behind the scenes. How was it possible to die and to return?

Oberyn learns to use guns thanks to Louise, though not soon enough did he come across a demon in the Red Lantern district and teamed up with various others to fight it off. This triggered increased demon battles in the Coliseum in which he became severely injured in his last battle. Injuries sustained was a dislocated shoulder, head concussion, and deep lacerations across the chest at the time. It was during his healing process that Oberyn disappeared from the city.

↠ Personality:

Unbowed: not having submitted to pressure or demands

In canon it is mentioned that Oberyn studied in the Citadel with the Maesters, who are scholars, healers, learned men who take up studies, spending years to master certain information and are commonly seen as trusted advisers to high born families. Once something is considered mastered, a link is formed on a chain, a Maester's Chain. Oberyn formed six before finding his time there to be boring and left. This follows in the Martell words of Unbowed given Oberyn chose not to submit to the pressures or demands of the Maesters. He sails his own ship, so to speak and once he thinks he's learned enough or all that is needed, he moves on to the next thing.

Many people even find it reckless how he does what he wants, when he wants, given most are not as free-spirited as Oberyn. Not many have traveled outside of Westeros and find it strange that Oberyn is not only doing this on his own, but on his own free will. He also is easily adaptable to new locations ignoring that many will frown upon their beliefs. He very much believes in equality among men and women, which is often not found not only outside of Dorne, where he originates, but in his high born status and he's not afraid to flaunt his progressive stance on the topic.

"People everywhere have their differences. In some places, the highborn frown upon those of low birth. In other places, the rape and murder of women and children is considered distasteful."

Unbent: not having yielded or submitted

Perhaps fueled by revenge, Oberyn is not afraid of making it known one of the major reasons for him to go to King's Landing was not entirely for King Joffery's wedding, but also for his own personal en devour. In an argument or fight, he is unwilling to back down, at first taking consideration and evaluating the situation, but he is a foe to be wary of. His combat skills are often hidden, but with quick reflexes, are just as quickly revealed.

Fueled by his desire for revenge, he ignores the warnings and advice from others. It is spoken by other characters familiar with him that Oberyn's older brother and head of family has tried to convince Oberyn to let his obsession with revenge to be let go and forgotten for the sake of the relationship with their house and others. Oberyn ignores those pleas and follows his plans with the mastering of poisons at the Citadel and training in Braavos where it is said some of the best swordsmen hail from.

In the trial by combat, Oberyn volunteers to represent Tyrion, and ignores his suggestion to wear a helmet, which eventually is a critical mistake that leads to his death. However, Oberyn is clouded by not only his stubbornness, but his focused drive and obsession.

As a teenager, he is with Cersei and seeing the newborn "monster" Tyrion who killed her mother in childbirth. Oberyn is unwilling to agree with her that her newborn brother was a monster and purposely murdered their mother, and refuses to acknowledge that even during Tyrion's trial for the murder of King Joffery as both are adults. In his battle with the Mountain (again, he's being taken before this battle in-game), he's unwilling to yield to the far bigger and stronger foe, until he hears the confession of the rape and murder of Elia Martell, Oberyn's sister, and children.

Unbroken: not interrupted or disturbed; continuous

Oberyn can be considered a free-spirit, as many of Dorne are looked upon with such ideals. He has a lust-driven mind and doesn't mind lazing about in the brothels when other business can be attended to during his time in King's Landing. However, despite appearing aloof, he is a natural-born leader. Not only a prince of Dorne, but he spent time with the Second Sons, a mercenary in Essos. After that, he formed his own mercenary and lead them for some time afterwards before returning back to Dorne. His daughters look up to him and are fiercely loyal to him not out of family obligation but also in recognition of his leadership and for what he stands for. Posthumously, they carry on his legacy in their own fighting abilities and determination learned by Oberyn.

Overall, appearances can be deceiving. Although free-spirited, fiercely loyal, and determined, Oberyn often is trusted but is recognized as someone who is good at playing a bluff and often speaks in a manner of both giving information and seeking out information at the same time. He knows when to keep quiet and process everything, but also isn't afraid of showing his cards, such as being straight forward with his distaste of the Lannisters or whoever/whatever the circumstance.

He's an excellent strategist, as shown how he is able to see weaknesses in others and poke the already sore spots they may possess over it. By making it appear he's willing to extend the relationship of the Martells and the Lannisters, he manages to weasel his way onto the king's council, where he'll be part of the 'in the know' crowd on the movements of the king and what he is planning. It also places him as one of the advisers and perhaps where he can be more influential and manipulating the king to Oberyn's advantage.

After the wedding where Queen Cersei loses her title with her son now king, Oberyn is quick to poke that sore spot of hers, by throwing her title in her face, "...and Cersei Lannister, the Queen Regent. I suppose it is former Queen Regent now." He quickly recognizes she is the biggest manipulator of her king son, and in a teasing manner calls her out on it, "I expect it is a relief, Lady Cersei, giving up your regal responsibilities. Wearing the crown for so many years must have left your neck a bit crooked."

↠ Inventory: Oberyn will have his trademark yellow surcoat and clothes upon him from Dorne/King's Landing. As far as anything else, whatever managed to survive his absence from the game previously.

↠ Powers: Oberyn has no specific powers, but does possess a superior ability to wield weaponry such as swords and spears in fanciful way that is not often seen. It is also widely known that he spent time studying poisons at the Citadel (where Maesters train and study) and is rumored to be a master of understanding, treating, and using poisons. Although I plan on taking Oberyn before his battle with Gregor Clegane, he had poison on the tip of his spear that ended up killing his rival after a few days.

↠ Languages: Westerosi Common Tongue (similar to English), Valyrian (including Braavosi)

↠ Reason for Playing This Character: Although only featured in one season in Game of Thrones (since I'm taking him from TV canon vs. book canon), Oberyn Martell has a lasting impact. He blazes onto the screen, full of confidence, humor, and an underlying motive that he fearlessly puts out into the open. I love how everything he says has a point, whether it's explaining his hatred for the Lannisters, or being understanding towards other characters during difficult points of time for them (such as Tyrion Lannister's lock up during his trial). He's overly confident, loyal, and free-spirited, which is not commonly seen among the cast of Game of Thrones. Despite not holding back his motives, it appears that majority of the characters like him and enjoy his company.

↠ What is Your Character's Sin?: Gluttony. over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items.

"Then everyone is missing half the world's pleasure. The gods made that, and it delights me. The gods made this... and it delights me. When it comes to war I fight for Dorne, when it comes to love — I don't choose sides." - a well known quote spoken by Oberyn regarding his bisexuality, and is open about it.

Oberyn Martell doesn't hide that he indulges in all of life, enjoying every last morsel of it, even. He often is found in the brothels of King's Landing, unashamed of just how he seeks pleasure from both women and men, and wants to return the pleasure for his companions, including his paramour.

He is also a glutton for revenge, dedicating all the hours of training in craftsmanship of poisons to the skill he possess for combat. He doesn't heed the advice his warpath of revenge could possibly lead to his demise. He's only looking to sate his desires of his revenge against Gregor Clegane who raped and murdered Oberyn's sister and the murder of her children.

There are scenes of his over indulging in food, and drinking the finest wines the wealthy Lannisters are to offer, even allowing his paramour to hand-feed him without a complaint as he looks on seductively towards an observing knight during a wedding.

Oberyn doesn't hide that he comes from a high born family, though is often humble about it. The way he carries himself and shares his experiences, it is clear that he goes ahead and is picky and choosey of his selections, but never thinks twice if it's just too much.

SAMPLES

↠ First Person: [The video starts with a low laughter before coming into focus.]

It seems I have woken up from a long dream. One where I thought I was back in Dorne watching my youngest daughters play in the Water Gardens. Dorea has a very beautiful laugh, one I can never forget, and yet my eyes must deceive me because I wake up and find myself surrounded by four walls and noisy traffic outside.

My wounds are healed and my head is clear, though people in the streets look upon me as if I'm a walking spirit. Have I been missing?

[And yet he hasn't admitted that he doesn't have any specific recollection of 'home' either. Which that alone is troublesome.]

I believe this calls for some wine, if I'm not mistaken.

↠ Third Person: Oberyn didn't want to draw too much attention, making a point to leave Dorne earlier than most of his party, which would allow him to enter King's Landing before most were even awake. He knew Dorne was different from the rest of the world, where girls were praised and unharmed, and bastards aren't looked down upon. All that would be gone now as he moved through the streets, his paramour, Ellaria Sand, at his side after he safely stalled the horses they road.

Although he was in good spirits despite the long ride, his jaw was tight and he was more quiet than usual. There was a reason why he came to the royal wedding of King Joffery, and that was to confirm and confront Gregor Clegane for the rape and murder of his sister and her children. Ellaria knew that, and soon the Lannisters would too, as he could feel the blood beginning to warm his body accompanied with a bad taste in his mouth. "Come, my love, they say women here are as loving as they are in Dorne. I'd like to see if that's true."

He had a particular taste in mind. Not the meek or timid, but submissive enough that he could be aggressive without being concerned his partner wasn't pleasured in the act. Looking over a line up of women, he finally picked two of interest for his paramour and the young man presenting the women to them. Claiming he wasn't available, Oberyn didn't care. He was a fine specimen and spoke with an air of superior confidence towards him; it was a turn on for this matter. Moving toward the young man, Oberyn stood before him, initially sizing him up, but in the end only broke into a smile. "You won't be disappointed."
